When people think of Texas, they do not often think of wine! However, areas like Fredericksburg, Texas, have become the go-to destination for wine fans, with plenty of master winemakers creating fantastic bottles unique to the region.
Explore our blog to discover the best Fredericksburg wineries – as well as a little history of winemaking in the Lone Star State.
You Can Find it All in Texas Wine Country
Fredericksburg in Texas Hill Country has quickly become Texas’ top destination for food and wine. The area was founded by German settlers in 1846, which is still apparent in the area’s surrounding architecture and Texas German dialect.
While winemaking in Texas can be dated back as far back as the 1920s, it was not until the 1970s that wineries really started to take form. Today, Fredericksburg boasts more than 50 wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms. Below are some of our favorite vineyards and tasting rooms you can visit while touring Texas Hill Country.
Signor Vineyards
Signor Vineyards in Fredericksburg is a relatively new establishment, entering the area’s already stellar list of vineyards in 2015. The location features award-winning wines from its own vineyards as well as several popular options from Oregon. Signor is home to seven varietals including Tannat, Montepulciano, Touriga Nacional, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese.
While sipping your favorite wines, you can also visit Joanna’s Market, a farmhouse-inspired market that sells handcrafted soaps, infused oils, candies and fresh baked goods from locally owned Emma + Ollie bakery.
Barons Creek Vineyards
Baron’s Creek Vineyards in Fredericksburg is also one of the region’s newer wineries, first opening its doors in 2015. Texas residents and visitors can also visit tasting rooms in McKinney, Georgetown and Granbury. For out-of-towners or local residents looking for a staycation, the Fredericksburg location also features two Italian-inspired villas with several guest rooms and master suites available.
As for wine, Baron’s Creek features fantastic wines from local Texas grapes, as well as the world’s best varietals from Washington, California and Spain. Enjoy the deep fruit and chocolate notes of their Crazy Train Cabernet Sauvignon or lighten things up with their Estate Dry Rosé. Baron’s Creek also serves up cheese and charcuterie boards to snack on while you sip your favorite bottles.
Grape Creek Vineyards
Grape Creek Vineyards has the distinction of being Fredericksburg’s very first vineyard, opening in 1983. Nicknamed Tuscany in Texas, they have grown to be one of the premier Texas Hill Country vineyards, featuring 14 different varietals and blends from dark and complex reds to bright and vibrant whites.
Grape Creek offers exciting tours where you take a relaxing tram ride through the vineyards, learn about the winemaking process and participate in three different tastes: red, sweet and mixed. You can also enjoy fine dining at Stout’s Signature, their onsite restaurant serving masterfully prepared steaks, handcrafted pizzas and seasonal cheese plates.
Heath Sparkling Wines
For years, California has dominated the sparkling wine market. Heath Sparkling Wines is out to change that, with Texas’ very first winery dedicated to bright and vibrant sparkling wines.
Heath Sparkling Wines is the sister vineyard to Grape Creek Vineyards, part of the prestigious Heath Family Brands wineries. Heath specializes in four unique sparkling wines: exotic and citrusy Euphoria, vibrant and fruity Adoration, crisp and classic Blanc de Blancs and bright, medium-bodied Ebullience.
While tasting their full range of sparkling wine offerings, you can enjoy small bites on their patio, such as cheese plates, hummus and artichoke dip from Stout’s Signature.
