Fort Worth Zoo or Dallas Zoo
If you are an animal lover, you will be happy to know that Central Texas is home to two amazing zoos. Texas residents differ as to which zoo is their favorite, but you should experience both and make your own decision.
The Fort Worth Zoo is the larger of the two and includes several fun and educational attractions that are sure to please. The zoo’s brand new Elephant Springs is a wide open area housing a three-generation family of elephants and a one-horned rhinoceros. Families can visit the Outdoor Learning Theater to learn all about the zoo’s most popular residents. See majestic birds of prey at Raptor Canyon, an immersive habitat that includes seven species of raptors.
The Dallas Zoo is a more intimate affair that includes plenty of educational attractions that keep kids entertained and learning about the world’s diverse wildlife. The zoo’s extensive Giant of the Savannah Exhibit features wildlife from the African continent, where you can feed hungry giraffes or visit Wilds of Africa and explore the zoo’s $14 million Hippo Exhibit. The Dallas Zoo also includes a large and engaging Children’s Center where kids can pet several animals or feed exotic birds.
USS Lexington Museum
The USS Lexington Museum is the nation’s longest-serving Essex Class aircraft carrier, which arrived on the shores of Corpus Christi in 1992. Despite shooting down 372 enemy aircraft, the Lexington was sunk four times but was repaired and brought back into service throughout the Pacific Theater, earning her the nickname The Blue Ghost. Today it is docked adjacent to a full naval aviation museum dedicated to her history. The ship features five guided or self-guided tours, including the flight deck, lower decks, hanger and more. The ship also has a number of escape rooms, ghost tours and a 15-seat flight simulator.
