4 Fun Ways to Entertain Kids This Summer

The clock is ticking. The calendar days are whittling away. The end of the school year is fast approaching, and parents everywhere are scrambling to figure out how they’re going to entertain their kids this summer. Whether you go to work or stay at home, we’re offering up a few summer fun ideas that are sure to help you beat the inevitable boredom that can result from long summer days.

Get in touch with nature

Summer is universally adored because its long days and sunny weather. Take full advantage of the warm shorts and strappy dress-wearing weather with plenty of outdoor activities. Most areas make this easy by offering special outdoor activities. Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston and Zilker Hillside Theatre in Austin both host outdoor performances all summer long.

You don’t have to leave home to enjoy the summer sun. Hanging with the family in your own backyard is the perfect way to enjoy quality time together while keeping it casual. You can have a backyard barbecue or picnic or plan a night under the stars to stargaze. Just make sure you’re protecting yourselves from mosquitoes with citronella candles or spray.

Movie marathon

Summer and movies seem to go hand in hand, maybe because we are more relaxed and more inclined to take vacations. It’s the perfect season to enjoy a drive-in movie. Luckily, Texas still has several in operation. It’s the perfect place to bring families because little ones who get bored can go play with other children without disturbing others.

Summer provides a reprieve from homework, so make the most of this extra time your kids have by hosting family movie night. Whether you have a theatre/media room or a large-screen TV in your living room, you can recreate the movie-going experience at home, complete with popcorn, candy, and comfy seats.

Splash in the pool

Swimming is the quintessential summer activity. The beauty of living in a master-planned community, like many of the areas in which Perry Homes builds, is that they offer refreshing, often elaborate pool areas. Make sure you and your kids take full advantage of your neighborhood’s pool season. Most of them have splash pads that younger kids will love. Texas is warm enough that many people choose to build a pool in their own backyard. Even if you don’t have one, there are still plenty of ways to keep cool at home. Get a water table for the littlest ones or an inflatable water slide for older kids.

Camp out

Summer is long, so sometimes kids just need to get out for a bit. Consider enrolling them in a local day camp. It will provide them with some much-needed stimulation and allow them to socialize with their peers. Everywhere from churches to schools to fun centers offer summer programs, from all day for working parents to just a few hours.

As long as you stay creative and remember that the best part of the season is having more time to spend together, you’re sure to have a summer everyone will enjoy.
